The company that owns the burning Hazelwood open-cut coal mine in Victoria says it has “nothing to hide” from an inquiry into the blaze and has defended the level of fire preparedness at the mine.

Senior executive Luc Dietvorst, head of Generation Australia at GDF SUEZ Australian Energy said: “We have all the fire mitigation programs in place.

We have a very safe working environment for our people, and a safe environment for the community.”

State Premier Denis Napthine added the mine had a “significant fire response team” and a significant focus on fire safety.
